2023-2024 programme grant: £10,000 (€11,300)

About 1 million Rohingya people live in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, the largest refugee camp in the world. The Rohingya are a largely Muslim people, with no state of their own, who were violently displaced from Myanmar in 2017. What was once a relief situation now requires a long-term development approach. WDR’s partner, DanChurchAid, is providing an innovative self-learning programme as many refugees had to abandon their education when displaced. Female Rohingya adolescents and youth receive learning materials in their homes, with continuous assistance for Rohingya volunteer teachers who themselves receive support from host Bangladeshi teachers. Local Bangladeshis also benefit, with their Bangla workbooks aligned with their government curriculum.

“I learned the Burmese and English alphabet. The Self-Learning Kit has helped me adjust to changes and stay positive and am also teaching my three children. I am ready for the next course from Self Learning Kit.”
