MCI statement on recently approved Migration and Asylum Pact

The Methodist Church in Ireland is concerned about the recently approved Migration and Asylum Pact.

While in no way perfect, the EU has had the power to challenge human rights records outside its borders. We feel that the EU doing deals with countries that have poor human rights records undermines the EU’s commitment to human rights. We are concerned that the detention facilities similar to prisons in a few places may become normalised across the EU. We call on all MEPs and candidates in the upcoming election, as well as members of the Dáil, to oppose any such infrastructure across the EU, including within Ireland.
