Statement in advance of Thursday’s Local Election

The Rev. David Nixon, President of the Methodist Church in Ireland and the Rev. Dr. David Clements, Chair of the Northern Executive of the Methodist Church's Council on Social Responsibility have issued the following Statement in advance of the Local Election taking place on Thursday 18th May, 2023.

"In view of the Local Council Elections taking place in Northern Ireland this week, the Methodist Church in Ireland calls on all its members to participate fully in this important democratic process.

The privilege of living in an open democracy brings with it a civic responsibility. We ask all our members, who are entitled to vote, to exercise that civic duty and go out and vote, if at all possible.

We ask all our members to pray for all involved in the election process and then to support all who are elected to local councils throughout their term of office.

Given the democratic deficit that prevails over the Assembly at this time, it is all the more important to engage with these council elections. "
