President attends Gurteen College's 75th Birthday

On Saturday 3rd September 2022 the President of the Methodist Church, the Rev. David Nixon will join others at a College open day to celebrate Gurteen Agricultural College’s 75th birthday.

The College came into existence in 1947 when the Methodist Conference, through its Council on Social Welfare purchased a 300 acre farm in Gurteen, Ballingary, Roscrea. Its first Principal was Rev. J. Wesley McKinney.

The College was originally visualised as a ‘model farm’ but it was changed to be an agricultural college.

The College was opened in 1947 and the President has a family connection as one of his uncles was among the first of the 1947 students to attend.

Today the College caters for a variety of students and topics.

The President has said:

I am looking forward to my visit to Gurteen College and would thank God for the vision He gave to those within our Church to establish the work of the College and ask for His continued blessing on all who work and study there.”
