The Methodist Church in Ireland (MCI) is committed to the wellbeing of the children and young people who attend our programmes. Having been at the forefront of Safeguarding since its inception, the church passionately believes in ensuring safe spaces for youth & children’s activities.  We believe that everyone should feel safe and have a voice.

Since 2004, MCI’s Child Protection Policy has been called ‘Taking Care’, written in conjunction with our colleagues from the Presbyterian Church in Ireland. MCI have continued to review and update this policy to ensure that the Church has the most current policies and procedures in place.  This is the document upon which our child protection policies are based.

The MCI Safeguarding Officer provides a comprehensive Child Protection training programme for leaders, volunteers and ministers across the island of Ireland.  Each training session will last a minimum of two hours and attendees must be present for the duration.

MCI processes vetting forms through the National Vetting Bureau and AccessNI.  Vetting checks must now be completed through MCI at least once every three years for all working with under 18s, whether paid or voluntary.

Theology of Safeguarding

This Irish Methodist theology of Safeguarding is in substance drawn from a 2021 British Methodist Church document. Along with editorial changes, there have been other changes to the text so that the document speaks with an Irish Methodist voice and to the Irish context.  The document as presented does not show by quotation the direct use of the British Methodist text but the extensive use of the material is acknowledged here. We are indebted to the generosity of the British Methodist Church in making the development of this Irish Methodist understanding possible.  The document below is the understanding of the Methodist Church in Ireland.
