President attending National Day of Commemoration

On Sunday 10th July the President of the Methodist Church in Ireland, the Rev. David Nixon will be attending the Annual National Day of Commemoration which will be held in Collins Barracks, Dublin.

He will be leading the opening prayer. He will be there along with other senior Church Leaders as well as a representatives from the Jewish and Muslim faiths.

The purpose of the service is to remember all the Irish people who died in past wars or United Nations peacekeeping missions.

This Annual Service is held on the Sunday nearest the 11th July which is the anniversary of the date in 1921 that a truce was signed ending the Irish War of Independence.

The President of Ireland, the Taoiseach and other members of the Irish Government will attend.

Speaking ahead of the Service, the Methodist President has said:

“This is an important and poignant ceremony when we remember all those who have died in conflicts and pray for their families and peace throughout the world.”
