CSR Statement on Attacks of Shannon Key West

The Council on Social Responsibility of the Methodist Church in Ireland (Southern Executive) is saddened by the latest attack on the Shannon Key West Hotel in Rooskey, Co. Roscommon, earmarked for Direct Provision accommodation for Asylum Seekers. This is the second attack on the property. There have also been similar attacks in Moville, Co. Donegal and Wicklow town.

We wish to highlight that such attacks are not symptomatic of the local communities involved. Methodists have been playing a crucial role in the welcome, support and integration of Asylum Seekers in different areas, with such interaction being mostly positive.

Ultimately, these attacks expose the failure of Direct Provision. We have long stated that the system does not treat the people within it with the dignity that they deserve. We would urge the government to implement the recommendations of the McMahon report.
