PROFILE OF MRS LAURA GRIFFITH
“Laura, we really feel that administration is one of your gifts”. Four friends made this comment during a “Disciple” course, as we looked at the gifts God had given to each of us. Little did I know that years later I would be taking up office as Assistant Secretary in our new women’s organisation, “Methodist Women in Ireland”, before becoming General Secretary in June 2007!
Originally from Ballyhalbert, Co Down, I moved to Whiteabbey 18 years ago when I married Brian. We met through the Newtownabbey Methodist Mission’s Children’s Holiday Scheme where we were both leaders. We have two children, Claire (13) and David (10) and as a family we are actively involved in church life at Whiteabbey Methodist.
Up until 11 years ago I worked as a senior radiographer in the cardiovascular unit at the Belfast City Hospital. Following a career break I made the decision to be at home full time, working in the field of “social development” (that covers a multitude of things!). When both of the children were settled at school I took some “me” time and spent three wonderful years as a part time student at Belfast Bible College as part of the Women’s Study Fellowship. When I am not busy with the family or church activities my interests include photography, gardening, cycling, making cards, meeting friends for coffee and my doll’s house. In June of this year I also completed an intermediate certificate in counselling skills.
Joining my own YWA group provided the friendship and encouragement that I needed when I moved from a Baptist up-bringing to the Methodist Church. I served on YWA as NE District rep. and was the last Secretary of YWA. I also served as secretary of the Leader’s meeting for 4 years in my own church.
During my time in office so far I have really enjoyed meeting so many wonderful women from all over Ireland and it has been a real blessing to represent MWI at several Irish Methodist conferences and other events. Thank you for your continued prayerful support as we individually and as an organisation “Know Christ and make Him known”.
