John Wesley (DVD)

This DVD is a re-release of the J. Arthur Rank historical classic made in 1954 which charts the life of John Wesley from when he was saved out of a burning house as a child, through his Oxford days, a disastrous mission to America and his life changing Aldersgate experience. It then highlights how he brought the gospel into daily lives of the masses, the founding of Methodism and his pivotal role in raising the moral and religious climate in 18 th century England.

Methodist Present Potential

Methodist Present Potential – Luke Curran & Angela Shier Jones

Despite concerted efforts by the churches at the turn of the century, Generation X remained largely unconvinced about the value of attending church. One decade into “post postmodern emergent culture” members of generation Y reflect in this book on the tradition that they are part of. They honestly discuss the life and faith of the Methodist Church they have inherited from previous generations. Their aim is to make explicit the potential they believe can still be found in the present Methodist Church and state clearly what should be done if the Church is to have a future.

The Wesley Bible - NRSV
(Reviewed by Richard Clutterbuck)

In spite of my basic skepticism about ‘added value' bibles, this one does have some interesting points. It is basically the NRSV text with a running commentary provided by a large group of scholars who come, roughly speaking, from the Wesleyan/Methodist stable. Many of the names of contributors are familiar to me, and they do represent a broad spectrum of theological and biblical insight. In addition, text boxes provide applications of the text based on Wesley's own teaching, or the Methodist tradition of engagement with theological, spiritual and social issues. Some of these can read as rather trite; others are useful reminders of the distinctive way in which Methodists have read and lived the scriptures.

This would be a useful Bible for personal devotion, for a Bible study-group leader or for a local preacher. It is no substitute for a study Bible with cross references, or for a full-scale commentary, but it does what it sets outs to do and does it well.

Methodist Theology Today

Methodist Theology Today edited by Clive Marsh, Brian Beck, Angela Shier-Jones and Helen Wareing

British Methodism is reshaping itself. At a time of great uncertainty about the future, owing to declining numbers and an ever-closer relationship with the Church of England a collection of the liveliest theological minds in contemporary Methodism have written a book which shows how recent Methodist theology can be a resource for the future. At a time when it is often assumed that Methodists don't produce theologians, this examination of the essence and roots of Methodist theology will be especially welcome. Throughout the book, the focus is on the many ways in which Methodism 'carries' its theology, and how Methodism's emphases contribute to British Christianity. Contributors also suggest where Methodist theology may go in the future, making this a prophetic book. How does recent Methodist theology shape its future? What are the key Methodist emphases? How will Methodism influence the future of Christianity?

John Wesley – The Evangelical Revival and the Rise of Methodism in England – John Munsey Turner

This text seeks to set Wesley firmly in his historical context, analyzing his life, practice and theology. It shows that while there were "many Methodisms", there was a central core of spirituality and style which had a great influence on the artisan groups of men (and women), providing stability, purpose and meaning, and enabling "nobodies to become somebodies".

The author also discusses the Primitive Methodist Church, which illustrates the fact that Methodism was a wider phenomenon than the more Wesleyan varieties.
