Christ Church, Shannon church building which was recently damaged by fire. |
Christ Church, suffered extensive fire damage on Tuesday evening, 23rd March.
Although the congregation is saddened by this they have received support from the parish priest and the evangelical Shannon Christian Church. The wooden church is a well-known landmark on the way to the airport and, though it was only ever intended to be temporary, it has been the place where the joint Methodist, Church of Ireland and Presbyterian congregation has met for forty-eight years. Church services are currently being held in nearby St John's National School in Drumgeely.
Among some of the messages received is this: "We all know that a church is not made up of buildings but people, and the people of your congregation carry Christ in their hearts, they don't lock him in the building every week after service."
Dr Rosemary Power, the pioneer minister based at Shannon, is positive despite the set-back, knowing that as church, as God's people on earth, we are all called to care for each other first. However hard, this is a mission opportunity.
