Core Values

The WDRC identifies with the principle of a people bound in a mutual moral covenant with a loving Creator God. Micah chap 6, verse 8 expresses the essence of this covenant - WDRC is very much within this covenant of justice and compassion.

"He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God." - Micah 6 v 8

Even more clearly the core values of WDRC are those of the New Testament. Jesus Christ himself simplified moral and spiritual requirement into one sentence when he declared that the priority in human life was to love God utterly and our neighbours as ourselves (Matthew chapter 12, verses 28 to 31). The importance of our response to human need at the final judgement is highlighted in Matthew chapter 25, verses 31 to 46.

In the Lord's prayer Jesus calls us to pray "Your Kingdom come, your will be done on Earth as it is in heaven." Our committee is one of WORLD development and understands this in terms of current concerns, large and small:

  • Caring for the Earth's resources and valuing all its people
  • Sharing the world's resources fairly
  • Establishing justice and creating the conditions for peace
  • Promoting a truly global community

The WDRC follows the practice of the Founder of the Methodist Church, John Wesley, who said "Go always not only to those who need you but those who need you most". We do this by helping the poorest of the poor through small local organisations whose initiatives enhance the quality of life of those they seek to serve.

Essential ways in which the Scriptural command to love is expressed:

  1. WDRC will respect, empower and enable those it supports, recognising that WDRC is enriched by the partnerships.
  2. WDRC aims to help Methodist people understand development issues, keep them informed and challenge them to respond in appropriate ways
  3. WDRC aims to be a model of best practice in assessment, delivery and evaluation of grant-aid, advocacy, fund-raising and personnel management.
  4. WDRC believes in exploring and developing mutually beneficial partnerships with Overseas Methodist Conferences, Church Authorities, local groups and Aid Agencies.
