Riversmeeting: International Events

Riversmeeting is a newly formed society on the North Connaught Circuit. They meet in St Mary's Church Hall in Carrick on Shannon. At present they are looking for premises of their own having outgrown to the two previously rented premises.

Rivers is an attempt “to do” Church in a new and relevant manner. Their services include dance, flag worship, creative writing and art. There is a strong emphasis on different styles of worship music with the two worship bands playing a mix of traditional, contemporary, rap and dance music.

Rivers also has a thriving Parent and Toddlers group and a Charity shop operating in Carrick on Shannon.

But it is outside the confines of the Church Building that Rivers has made the biggest impact. There are at least 10 different nationalities represented at Rivers and this has prompted the organisation of various international festivals, primarily in Carrick on Shannon, but also throughout Leitrim and by invitation, in Larne and Dungannon in Northern Ireland.

The International events are usually bi-monthly and have had an attendance in total of over 4500 people in 2010. Such is the popularity of these events that Leitrim County Council frequently relies upon Rivers to organise community projects. This has helped local people to accept the New Irish as part of the community.

The events include international food tasting, multicultural music and other expressions of culture. Celtic Cross is a traditional Irish band with a comedy routine and are part of Rivers. They have been a blessing to many churches in terms of social evenings and fund raising events.
