Applying for TOM

What you need to do
  1. Think and pray carefully about applying for TOM and talk to those who have had the experience.
  2. Talk to DYCW staff about the Team and get their advice and any information you need. (Application packs are available from DYCW from January of each year for a Team On Mission year beginning in the September of the same year).
  3. Talk to your minister, youth leaders and parents about what you're thinking of doing. It's important to have their support.
  4. You are required to raise £1800 STG to help fund the Teams on Mission concept. Don’t be put off by this - get the information out to your congregation. Think about fund-raising ideas and ways in which you can raise the money. When people give you support in this way they are more likely to keep in touch with you and pray for you during the year. Money can be paid in one lump sum at the start of the year or in 4 monthly installments of £450 paid in Sept-Oct-Nov-Dec.
  5. Fill in the application and send it to the Department of Youth and Children’s Work by the closing date, Friday 30th March 2012. Don’t forget to include your medical form and names of referees.
  6. Put the interview dates in your diary! Saturday 21st April 2012. Interviews are carried out as a mixture of group and individual interviews, we prefer everyone to attend these, but we also understand that this may not be possible, so if the interview date is proving difficult for you, contact us and we will consider rearranging.
What DYCW will do
We will receive your application and write to your referees. At the same time as we are dealing with your application we will be in contact with churches that have expressed an interest in hosting a Team on Mission. In April we will have interviews and as a result of that process we will choose a Team on Mission to work directly with DYCW and Teams on Mission to work in local churches and projects. DYCW will provide training, mentoring, support and pocket money! The travelling team lives in a flat near the DYCW offices and DYCW provides them with a food budget, car and petrol expenses and pays their bills (except for personal phone calls).

What the local church will do
Those responsible for the project you are assigned to will give you a job description; provide resources to do the task, a local line manager and pastoral support. Accommodation and food will also be provided locally.

If you are accepted

We will place you on one of the teams. You will be asked what your preference is, travelling or static, we try to place people where they want but cannot promise this is always the case.

Training begins on Monday 3rd September 2012 (provisional date) (provisional date) and takes place in Belfast for 3 weeks. The year ends on The year ends on Sunday 11th August 2013 (provisional date).
